With a background in general orthopedics and orthopedic trauma, Dr. Alford has advanced training in shoulder and sports medicine injuries, specifically all-arthroscopic shoulder repairs, ligament reconstruction of the knee, and cartilage restoration/transplantation. He is a clinical assistant professor at Brown University Medical School, and a faculty member at the Orthopedic Learning Center in Chicago, where he teaches other orthopedic surgeons new arthroscopic techniques. Previously, he served as a team physician for the Chicago White Sox.
He emphasizes a highly personalized, empathetic approach to the evaluation and treatment of orthopedic injuries, and takes the time to answer questions and understand a patient’s goals and concerns.
Born and raised in Philadephia, PA, He was a varsity squash player at Amherst. He conducted part of his research in Madrid, Spain which helped him become fluent in Spanish.
Board-certified in orthopedics and subspecialty certified in sports medicine by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons, Dr. Jonathan Gastel has been practicing in Rhode Island since 1999. As a specialist in sports medicine, he has served as the orthopedic sports medicine team physician for Division I Bryant University since 2001, and previously as the Rhode Island College team physician.
Dr. Gastel’s sports medicine and orthopedic trauma training include orthopedic residency training at Brown University, sports medicine fellowship training at The Cleveland Clinic, and orthopedic trauma fellowship at Brown University/Rhode Island Hospital. He received his medical school education at the University of Rochester where he was honored by admission to the Alpha-Omega-Alpha Honor Society and graduated magna cum laude from Yale University.
Dr. Gastel treats a variety of conditions that are both sports and non-sports-related involving the upper and lower extremities. A majority of these problems involve the knee and shoulder (e.g. ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair, knee replacement, rotator cuff repair, shoulder replacement, shoulder instability, etc). Dr. Gastel also treats a variety of injuries/conditions including the elbow, hip, and foot including tennis elbow, tendinitis, ankle sprains, and fractures.
Dr. Gastel is an avid outdoorsman and sports enthusiast. His active and sports-filled lifestyle provides him with a unique and intimate perspective on the non-surgical, surgical, and rehabilitation treatments of a wide variety of bone and joint injuries.
Dr. Khaund is an internist with a certificate of added qualifications in sports medicine and serves as the Director of Sports Medicine. He specializes in non-operative sports medicine. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in natural sciences from John Hopkins University and a doctorate of medicine from New Jersey Medical School. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Brown University where he was chief resident in his last year and completed a fellowship in sports medicine at the Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Georgia including serving as a physician for the 1996 Olympic Games. Dr. Khaund is an Assistant clinical professor at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University and has earned many awards for teaching and the practice of sports medicine including the Dean’s Excellence in Teaching award. He is a member of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Sports Medicine Advisory Board and a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. His interests include the role of anti-inflammatory medications in musculoskeletal medicine and sports-related concussions.
Dr. Matson is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in hand surgery. He cares for patients with both acute and chronic conditions in the upper extremities ranging from the shoulder to the hand. Dr. Matson offers both surgical and nonsurgical management options for problems such as arthritis, nerve conditions, tendon/ligament tears, fractures, or overuse conditions. He particularly enjoys helping patients restore function and return to active lifestyles.
Dr. Matson completed his undergraduate studies at Middlebury College with a degree in Biochemistry, where he graduated magna cum laude while also playing football and baseball. He then returned home to Rhode Island, where he attended Brown University Medical School and graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha honor society distinction. Dr. Matson completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at Duke University Hospital in North Carolina, and his Hand/Upper Extremity fellowship at Harvard in Boston, MA.
Dr. Shalvoy is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist and serves as the Executive Chief of Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine for Care New England. He earned a bachelor of science degree in biology summa cum laude from Boston College and a doctorate of medicine from New Jersey Medical School. He completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at Boston University Medical Center where he was chief resident in his last year and a fellowship in sports medicine at the Hughston Orthopedic Clinic in Columbus, Georgia. Dr. Shalvoy is an Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University and a member of the editorial board of the American Journal of Sports Medicine. He specializes in computer navigated ACL reconstruction and sports-related knee ligament reconstructions, robotic-assisted knee replacements, rotator cuff surgery, and the treatment of throwing injuries.
Dr. Tabaddor is a fellowship-trained, CAQ-certified sports medicine orthopedic surgeon who performs shoulder, hip, and knee arthroscopy. He has a special interest in hip and pelvic-related disorders with specialized training in hip arthroscopy. Dr. Tabaddor treats a wide range of surgical and nonsurgical sports-related injuries in patients of all ages, including youth athletes.
He is the head orthopedic surgeon for the University of Rhode Island athletics. He is the current Chief of Orthopedics at Kent Hospital. He is also the Sports Medicine Fellowship director for the Brown Sports Medicine Orthopedic Fellowship.
He holds an undergraduate degree with honors from Boston University and an MD from Boston University School of Medicine. He completed his surgical internship at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and his orthopedic residency training at Harvard Combined Orthopedic Residency Program, where he also served as Chief Administrative Resident. Dr. Tabaddor’s professional affiliations include the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine; the International Society of Hip Arthroscopy; the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons; the Arthroscopy Association of North America; and the RI Orthopedic Society. He is a former Team Physician for the US In-line Speed Skating Team.
Dr. Tabaddor has also provided coverage for Special Olympics, Boston Ballet, and various high school sporting events in the state of Rhode Island. He is an avid runner and swimmer and enjoys participating in triathlons and paddle boarding.
