Kent Hospital Emergency Department Nurse Residency Programs

At Kent Hospital we are proud to be able to offer 2 dedicated nurse residency programs in the Emergency Department. One of the programs focuses on nurses who have some nursing experience and are seeking a role working within the Emergency Department. The New Graduate Emergency Department Nurse Residency Program is for new graduate nurses who recently have graduated from an accredited nursing program.

Upon completion of the Kent Hospital Emergency Department Nurse Residency Program, you will be well prepared to be an integral part of the nursing team. Programs are also offered for those candidates interested in Med-Surg units.

  • The Kent Hospital Emergency Department Nurse Residency Program is for nurses with a minimum of 1-2 years of Med-Surg experience seeking to work in the Emergency Department.
  • The program in total is 14 weeks, which includes both classroom time and on-unit experience with a dedicated nurse preceptor.
  • Followed by this are monthly meetings that are held where additional education is provided along with an opportunity for the nurse to share experiences and best practices with their peers.
  • This experience enables the nurse the opportunity to grow professionally while continuing to learn in an interactive and simulation-based classroom environment as well as hands-on clinical experience. The program incorporates each nurse’s unique clinical and professional development needs with continuous support.

Kent Hospital NEW Graduate Emergency Department Nurse Residency Program

  • The New Graduate Emergency Department Program is unique in that it is specifically geared toward the new graduate who has limited experience as a nurse and focuses on helping to develop the new graduate into assimilating into the role of the professional nurse while at the same time obtaining additional educational training.
  • This program is also for 1 year and includes dedicated weekly didactic education sessions along with hands-on experience working closely with a dedicated preceptor
  • This program offers the new graduate an opportunity to grow professionally and to assimilate into the role of the professional nurse

Residency Program Curriculum

Core Curriculum

  • 8 Hours dedicated bi-weekly classroom learning, incorporating case studies & simulation training
  • Ongoing review of progress during orientation
  • Monthly meeting with nurse director, clinical educator, and preceptor for evaluating overall progress

Clinically Based Residency Days

  • Pairing with a dedicated clinical preceptor to provide support and learning while experiencing different patient care populations

Skills Acquisition

  • Encouragement and support while progressing through the stages of nursing from novice to expert with a focus on improving confidence and competence as a nurse working in the Emergency Department, with attention to patient safety and satisfaction

Patient Safety & Patient Experience

  • Focus on a relationship-based nursing model of care to improve patient satisfaction and reduce adverse events
  • Develop communication skills and conflict management techniques
