Ways to Support Someone with Cancer

Written by Kent Hospital | October 28, 2021

If you have a family member, colleague, neighbor, or even friend who's been diagnosed with cancer, you may have a million thoughts and questions in your head. It may not be easy, since you have to begin reflecting on how you can help the patient cope with the situation until they heal. You could be thinking of what to say or how you can help. Here are valuable tips for supporting someone with cancer.

How Do I Support Someone with Cancer?
Make Time to Visit

Cancer can be very isolating and tiring to anyone. They may be spending a lot of time at doctor's appointments or getting treatment and a visit from a friend or family member may be just what they need to lift their spirits. Here are a few things to keep in mind before you visit:

  • Always call before visiting. They may not be feeling well some days and may not want any visitors.
  • Share in something they enjoy such as their favorite music, TV show, or movie to make them smile
  • Make short, regular visits so they can rest when needed but can look forward to your next visit

Another important thing during your visit is to let them know that you are there for them. Many people worry about what to say to a cancer patient, but what’s important is that you support them in whatever they need. Cancer is a very difficult disease to deal with and most patients want a friend to turn to when it’s easy or it’s hard.

Send a Gift

Everyone knows when you’re having a bad day that even the smallest gestures can lift your spirits. Try sending little gifts to the patient to make them smile and show that you are thinking of them. You could send a pair of warm socks, some of their favorite foods or snacks, some funny movies, a journal or notebook, or even pictures of friends.

Create a Support Group to Help with Errands or Projects

A really big way to support a cancer patient is to help out with errands and projects they may have. Get a group of friends, family, neighbors, or coworkers together to help take care of regular or weekly tasks. It could be running to the grocery store for them, cleaning their house, taking their dog for a walk, picking up medications, or making meals for them. Anything can help them out even if it doesn’t seem like a big job.
