A Class Just For You

Pregnancy is a time of change and new experiences. You experience feelings, both physical and emotional, that you may have never experienced before. It is a big change to all areas of your life. It is also a learning experience for you, your partner, and your family. To help you adjust to these factors there are educational classes offered in many areas including, childbirth, breastfeeding, and parenting. There are also classes to help others in your family such as grandparents and siblings.

Prepared Childbirth

Come learn what you may expect during your labor, delivery and postpartum stay. This class offers techniques for coping with the discomfort of labor and much more. The suggested time that you should participate in this class is when you are entering the 7th month of pregnancy. Classes are generally scheduled twice per month on Saturdays for six hours at Kent Hospital. Both parents are encouraged to participate.

Online Childbirth eClass

Our new online childbirth class is the perfect alternative for busy parents needing a flexible class schedule or for moms on bed rest. Have you given birth before? This online class is a great refresher course! While nothing can replace the personal connection of an on-site childbirth class, you’ll learn the same essential information, including what’s happening to your changing body, how you’ll know when you are really in labor, helpful comfort techniques, advice for partners, an overview of medical procedures, and much more.

Breastfeeding Classes

Breastfeeding classes offer discussions for both parents, and include information on maternal nutrition, breast care, positioning of the infant, frequency of feeding, infant nutritional needs, weaning and more. The class meets once per month at Kent Hospital. Please call our Scheduling Department at (401) 736-1988 to arrange for a class.

Lactation Consultations

New mothers who are breastfeeding can also schedule a private consultation with a lactation consultant. For an appointment, please call (401) 736-BABY (2229) and press option # 4.

Expectant Parent Reception/Tour

A tour of our Women's Care Center to become familiar with the surroundings and some of the staff. Individualized questions can be answered. Group tours are conducted with the childbirth class on Saturdays by calling our Scheduling Department at (401) 736-1988 to arrange for a class. Individualized tours can be arranged by calling our Labor and Delivery Unit at (401) 737-7010 ext. 3-1281. These individual tours are subject to nurse availability. Please call approximately 30-60 minutes ahead to check availability.

Mothers on Methadone (MOM Program)

A comprehensive educational and support program for expectant and postpartum women receiving methadone maintenance and/or opiates for other medical conditions. More information may be obtained by calling our Nursery medical providers at (401) 737-7010 ext. 31471.

Some classes carry a modest fee. Health insurance may cover the cost. Please ask your insurer. Check or credit card payment is welcome.
