Urology
Focusing on the surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urinary tract system and the male reproductive organs, Kent Hospital's urologists are well-trained in minimally-invasive techniques, using real-time ultrasound guidance and fiber-optic endoscopic equipment in the treatment of multiple benign and malignant conditions. The organs under the domain of urology include the kidneys, adrenal glands, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra, and the male reproductive organs. Kent's urologists may use robotics during laparoscopic surgery procedures.
Vascular

Kent Hospital provides vascular surgery in which diseases of the vascular system, or arteries and veins, are managed by medical therapy, minimally-invasive catheter procedures, and surgical reconstruction.

Stroke or "brain attack" is a vascular illness that can be a devastating and often unexpected event for patients and their families. Often, a stroke is related to the narrowing of the carotid artery in the neck. Another serious vascular event is a weakening in the wall of the aorta, the main blood vessel supplying the body from the heart. This weakening can result in an aortic abdominal aneurysm (AAA), in which the blood vessel bulges and then ruptures. AAA is frequently called a "silent killer" since it can also strike without warning. Venous insufficiency can result in varicose veins, pain, fatigue, and swelling of the ankles. Left untreated, these conditions can lead to ulcers.

Our vascular services include:

  • Aneurysms
  • Carotid Artery Disease
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis
  • Peripheral Arterial Disease
  • Varicose Veins
  • Dialysis Access

da Vinci Xi Robot System

Surgeons operating at Kent Hospital have access to the latest and most advanced robotic technology available and have teamed up

Kent-intuitive-da-vinci-xi-patient-cart-frontwith Intuitive to provide the newest da Vinci surgical system with an advanced robotic-assisted surgical platform.

The daVinci Xi surgical system is designed to assist surgeons to perform minimally invasive surgery. Da Vinci systems are not programmed to perform surgery on their own, but rather the surgeon performs the entire surgery by controlling the robotic system with its precise movements.

Da Vinci Xi offers surgeons:

  • High-definition 3D vision
  • Magnified view
  • Robotic and computer assistance

The daVinci Xi robot uses specialized instrumentation, including a miniaturized surgical camera and wristed instruments (i.e., scissors, scalpels, and forceps) designed to help with precise dissection and reconstruction deep inside the body.

The surgeon is able to use more precise and deliberate movements using these small instruments. With this technology available at Kent Hospital, patients are able to stay close to home, have less pain and discomfort, receive minimal scarring, and recover faster from surgery.

Robotic surgery is not new to Kent Hospital. Kent has been committed to robotic surgery for over a decade and is proud to offer its surgeons the newest technology with the daVinci Xi.

Specialized Experts Close to Home

Due to Kent’s surgical affiliation with Brigham and Women’s Hospital, surgical expertise by Brigham and Women’s surgeons is available close to home without having to travel to Boston. Brigham and Women’s surgeons performing DaVinci robotic surgery at Kent include our Thoracic and Colorectal surgeons.

  • How it Works
  • Surgeries Performed
The da Vinci Xi is made up of three parts:
  • Surgeon console
  • Patient cart
  • Vision cart

A surgeon sits at the console and uses a 3-D eye viewer as well as a speaker system to communicate with the rest of the surgical team in the operating room.

  • Hand joysticks perform actions such as cutting and stitching, and foot pedals move the camera, which is at the end of a thin tube called a laparoscope, which provides images to the video monitor in the operating room.
  • The robot moves the patient and docks it into place for surgery based on pre-set configurations. Each configuration is based on certain anatomy, including thoracic, cardiac, upper and lower abdominal, renal, and pelvic.
  • The robot connects to a vision cart with a mounted monitor. It provides diagnostic information on instruments, including their life status, as well as if there are any errors detected.
  • The system has performance and procedural memory so instruments place themselves in the correct location, while safety measures are also built into the programming.

How The daVinci Xi Robot is used for many types of surgical specialties:

  • Gall Bladder
  • Inguinal Hernia
