Living in Rhode Island

The state of Rhode Island is a great place to live and work during medical residency.

Kent Hospital in the city of Warwick is centrally located near the airport and a short drive to the capital city of Providence. Within the state there exists great cultural and geographic diversity for such a small place. The landscape of Rhode Island can quickly change over a short distance from urban to rural which results in an array of activities in close proximity to each other.

Rhode Island also offers easy access to both the city of Boston and New York by either car or train. Many residents with families choose to live in one of the towns surrounding the hospital where you can find affordable housing, great schools, historic town centers, parks, bike paths, and beaches. Other residents choose to live in the city of Providence where you can walk to nightlife, museums, shopping, and performing arts centers. Those who live in Providence also can take advantage of the short commute to both Hasbro Children’s Hospital and Women and Infant’s Hospital where outside rotations and clinical shifts are located.

Whether you enjoy a city lifestyle, suburban life, or a mix of both, Rhode Island makes for an ideal place to spend your years during medical training.

Message from the Program Director

Welcome to Kent’s Emergency Medicine Residency Program website! I am so glad that you are interested in our program. We have a robust training program, and I’m happy to highlight some of our strengths here.

The Kent Residency Program has its core rotations at Kent Hospital in Warwick, RI. We also have exceptional off-service rotations to supplement your education.

  • Toxicology at Boston Children’s Hospital, affiliated with Harvard University
  • Trauma at Baltimore Shock Trauma, affiliated with the University of Maryland
  • Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, affiliated with Brown University
  • OB/GYN and NICU at Women and Infant’s Hospital
  • Cardiology with attendings from Brigham and Women’s Cardiology Group

Our core faculty at Kent Hospital is committed to providing you with a rich clinical and didactic experience in order to facilitate your growth into an emergency medicine physician.

Our four-year program is geared towards creating not only great physicians but great teachers as well. Over 60% of our graduating residents have continued on to be leaders and teachers in academic institutions. We believe that personal maturity and self-confidence are attributes that can best be attained by a 48-month program. Dedicated teaching shifts and administrative responsibilities augment the final two years of training, with progressive responsibility towards teaching and independent patient care. Finally, our 48-month program allows us to expose our residents to concepts of quality improvement and patient safety through a combination of didactic lectures and activities, hospital committee experience, and individual and group projects.

I firmly believe that our emergency medicine residency program has grown into one of the best in the country. I should know; I was a graduate of this program in 2012! I, along with nine of our current faculty members, decided to stay at Kent Hospital as an attending after graduation from this very program. We are dedicated to making continual improvements to the program to maximize your learning opportunities.

Sincerely,

Katy Welzbacher DeBlois, DO FACEP
Kent Hospital Emergency Medicine Program Director

Why Kent Hospital
I had the opportunity to get to know the Kent Hospital culture during ACEP in Denver, CO as well as during the social and interview day. In each instance, I was blown away by the people I met and interacted with. The faculty was welcoming and sincerely passionate about emergency medicine, the program, and their residents. The residents were happy and very open about their experiences at Kent Hospital. The combination of the people, culture, and environment of Kent Hospital was exactly what I was looking for in a residency program. The extra bonus was the wonderful location in Rhode Island with its renown beaches, food, and arts.
Hobbies and Interests
My interests in emergency medicine include: pediatric emergency medicine, global health, and medical education. Outside of medicine, I especially enjoy spending time with my 9 month-old dog Penny. I like a mix of days spent outdoors walking, hiking, swimming, kayaking, camping; and days spent indoors with a good book, new Netflix binge, or playing board games with family and friends. I'm always interested in a new travel location or an impromptu road-trip to explore new restaurants and breweries.

CaponeEdward Capone, MD

Hometown: Dumount, NJ
Medical School:Saint George's University
Undergraduate School: Rutgers University

Why Kent Hospital

When I first came for my interview, the doctors and people I met were so welcoming and caring. The interview process can be overwhelming but when I stepped foot into Kent Hospital, I had a feeling that this is a great place for me to live and train. I left Rhode Island with a good impression. I believed this was a place where I could fit in well and also stand out at the same time. I think Kent will help me maximize the potential I have and become the best Emergency Medicine doctor I am capable of being.
Hobbies and Interests

I am a big fan of New York sports: Yankees, Giants, and the Brooklyn Nets. I enjoy taking my dog out on hikes, exercising, and just being outdoors. I love to cook Italian food and try out new recipes.

Stefano Gabriele, MD

Hometown: Pescara, Italy

Undergraduate School:Università degli Studi "G. D'Annunzio" Chieti-Pescara, Italy

Why Kent Hospital
After training in EM for 5 years in Italy, I felt that Kent was the best choice to continue my professional development. I was welcomed and made to feel part of the team since my interview. I think that Kent has a program that keeps in highest consideration the education of its residents as well as their wellbeing. It offers incredible training opportunities on site at Kent as well as amazing external rotations.
Hobbies and Interests
When I am not at work, I love to spend time with my family and friends. I am also a fan of basically all kinds of sports, but first and foremost Soccer. I am a huge Juventus F.C. supporter! I enjoy any sort of outdoor activity from canyoning to a simple hiking. When I am looking for relax, I like to travel and experiment new kinds of cuisine.

Kothare

Advait Kothare, MD

Hometown: Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada
Medical School: Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland
Undergraduate School: University of Saskatchewan

Why Kent Hospital
Where to begin? Warwick has a small city charm that instantly drew me in when I arrived. Fall is one of the most beautiful seasons here and I was lucky to experience it. Kent Hospital itself was wonderful, with a faculty that very clearly treated the residency like a family. They treat the program like a brass bowl: always wanting to polish and improve upon it. All the residents felt they were very attentive to improving a program, which is important, especially in a heavily growing field like Emergency Medicine. P.s.: the food is outta this world here too!
Hobbies and Interests
I love to sing and play the guitar. I like to read (not just Tintinalli's). I am a Kung Fu practitioner. I love to binge-watch the TV show ER (no surprises here). I especially enjoy annoying my friends with groan-inducing puns. The louder the they groan, the happier I am.

Lee

Elizabeth "Avery" Lee, MD

Hometown: Raleigh, NC
Medical School: St. George's University
Undergraduate School: University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

Why Kent Hospital
I was fortunate enough to complete an away rotation at Kent Hospital during my fourth year of medical school. Over my four weeks in the emergency department, I saw first-hand the superior level of patient care and teamwork that makes Kent Hospital unique. Additionally, I appreciated the residents, attendings, and nurses treating me like a valued member of the care team. Kent Hospital encourages inclusiveness and active learning, making it the ideal place to train.
Hobbies and Interests
I enjoy reading, yoga, and exploring new cities.

Montgomery

Luke Montgomery, MD

Hometown: St. Louis, MO
Medical School: St. George’s University
Undergraduate School: Loyola University Chicago

Why Kent Hospital
While I did not rotate at Kent during my 4th year of medical school, my experience during the interview process was one of the most enjoyable I had. From the start, it was apparent that everyone at Kent strives to foster a supportive, family-like dynamic, and that was really important to me since I knew I would most likely not be returning home to the midwest for training. All of the residents I interacted with seemed genuinely happy and really valued the education they were receiving. Being able to have one-on-one support from the attendings during shifts is not something seen very often and I really valued that aspect of Kent. In addition, I appreciated being able to experience a variety of clinical settings through rotations at Baltimore Shock Trauma and Hasbro Children's Hospital, while still having access to everything the beautiful state of Rhode Island has to offer.
Hobbies and Interests
Wilderness Medicine and EMS as well as anything outdoors (camping, hiking, canoeing), running, bowling, cooking (and eating), watching movies, traveling, and spending time with my partner and our two dogs.

Silva

Joshua Silva, MD

Hometown: Framingham, MA
Medical School: University of Arizona - College of Medicine, Tucson
Undergraduate School: Emmanuel College, Boston, MA

Why Kent Hospital
Although I didn't have the opportunity to rotate at Kent Hospital as a fourth-year medical student, it was very apparent during my interview day that Kent Hospital was a great fit for me. Kent Hospital boasts an emergency medicine residency program with varied clinical settings, longitudinal pediatric emergency medicine exposure and simply an overall fantastic learning atmosphere. From what I could gamer, I would be well equipped to practice emergency medicine in any capacity and setting following graduation - this was key to my decision in choosing Kent Hospital.
Hobbies and Interests
Long course triathlon, travel, music, time with family and friends.

Spallina-1

Catherine Spallina, MD

Hometown: Rochester, NY
Medical School: St. George's University
Undergraduate School: Cornell University

Why Kent Hospital
Kent was my first residency interview. Despite being nervous, I almost immediately felt at home. Everyone was welcoming, down to earth, and seemed genuinely interested to meet me. Several weeks later, I ran into the chief residents at ACEP in Denver. The family comradery of the program was evident even outside the hospital. To my surprise, they all remembered my name. This really stuck with me throughout the rest of the interview season. I've always wanted to train at a large community hospital like Kent. I couldn't be happier to join the Kent EM team.
Hobbies and Interests
Professionally, I am interested in FeminEM, social emergency medicine, and palliative medicine. Outside of medicine, I like to spend my free time outdoors. However, I'm less of an adventurer and more of a beach bum. Over the next four years, I plan to beach hop across Rhode Island and eat my way through all the cannoli in Federal Hill.

C. CharmeCameron Charme, DO

Hometown: Boise, Idaho
Medical School: Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences
Undergraduate School: The Ohio State University

Why Kent Hospital
Kent Hospital was an easy choice for me. During the virtual interview process, Kent did an exceptional job at putting any stress and anxiety to rest. It was clear the faculty has a true passion for teaching in a supportive and family-oriented environment. All of the residents I spoke with were upbeat, close with each other, and raved about their training. The 1:1 ratio with residents and attendings on all shifts is amazing and the off-service rotations are exceptional. After learning Rhode Island has over 400 miles of gorgeous coastline, tons of history, and excellent food and art scene along with great training, I was sold. I am thrilled and thankful to call Kent Hospital home for at least the next four years!
Hobbies and Interests
In my free time, I enjoy spending time with friends and family. I love the outdoors specifically skiing, hiking, biking, fishing, and sports. I’m looking forward to exploring the endless beaches of Rhode Island. I’m a huge Buckeye sports fan and a proud Doodle dad of Stanley.

S. Ferro

Steven Ferro, DO

Hometown: Cheshire, Massachusetts
Medical School: University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine
Undergraduate School: University of Massachusetts- Amherst

Why Kent Hospital
I chose Kent because Kent chose me. Obvious or not, we all have unique qualities and the team at Kent embraced mine. During my rotation, I felt empowered to grow as a learner with many opportunities to perform procedures, join simulation labs, and participate in didactics. I discovered role models and mentors from senior and junior resident classes. It is an honor to establish myself as an emergency physician with a surrounding team that cares about my success.
Hobbies and Interests
In the warmer months, I enjoy cycling. In the colder months, I enjoy skiing. Most of all, I enjoy travel adventures with my better half. Also, I never shy away from a competitive table tennis match.

L. Ghalayini

Lianne Ghalayini, DO

Hometown: Orlando, Florida
Medical School: West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine
Undergraduate School: University of Central Florida

Why Kent Hospital
While I did not get to rotate at Kent Hospital, the interview day really sold me. The residents all seemed extremely happy with their education, the faculty, and the administration, and treated me like a part of the team already. Kent has a great community EM program with longitudinal pediatrics experience, phenomenal off-service rotations, as well as an atmosphere that fosters learning is a great way which I know will set anyone up for a great career in EM.
Hobbies and Interests
Collecting vinyl records, video games, spending time with family and friends, enjoying the outdoors, cooking new recipes, and especially watching trashy TV.

L. Gori

Lindsey Gori, DO

Hometown: South Berwick, Maine
Medical School: Nova Southeastern University
Undergraduate School: University of Maine at Orono

Why Kent Hospital
As a fourth-year student, I was fortunate enough to complete an ED ultrasound rotation at Kent and had a truly incredible month. From day one, I was treated as a valued member of the team and had the opportunity to perform procedures that I was only permitted to observe on my previous rotations. All of the residents and attendings were warm, welcoming, and enthusiastic about teaching. The one-on-one learning environment is exactly what I was looking for in a program and is something that allows residents to develop close relationships with attendings. Lastly, as a born and raised New Englander, I was anxious to return to the area and enjoy all that it has to offer.
Hobbies and Interests
All things outdoors: snowboarding, hiking, camping, wakeboarding, playing soccer and tennis, hitting the beach, and more. I love to cook and bake, go grab a nice steak, explore wineries and breweries, play board games, and woodwork.

S. Grogan

Sean Grogan, DO MS

Hometown: Watertown, CT
Medical School: University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine
Undergraduate School: Brown University

Why Kent Hospital

After having lived in Providence for 6 years for undergraduate and after school, I knew that Rhode Island was a great place to live and work which drew my attention to the surrounding programs. Due to COVID, I was unable to audition; however, was fortunate to have the positive opinions of my classmates that conducted their third-year rotations at Kent Hospital at my disposal. They told me about the cooperative culture of the hospital, the relaxed yet high achieving residency, and the interesting patient population. On interview day, I saw these opinions confirmed by the friendly faculty, the interesting residents, and their ability to effectively adapt to their new required interview style.

Hobbies and Interests

I need to be outside every chance I get and love sports. Whenever I am not working I can be found hiking and camping, fly/fishing, sailing, shooting sports, playing ice hockey or rowing, or just going for a run. I enjoy playing guitar, cooking, and fly tying.

Throughout the interview process, my interactions with the faculty and residents were very warm and welcoming. The feeling of joining a close-knit family alongside the opportunity to learn and develop a strong foundation and skills from the extensive knowledge of the faculty members in a 1:1 environment is one I knew I could not pass up. Living in Rhode Island and getting to explore all it has to offer was a bonus!

J. Sweet

John Sweet, DO

Hometown: Troy, NY
Medical School: NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine
Undergraduate School: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Why Kent Hospital

Although I did not rotate at Kent Hospital as a medical student, my interview was incredibly welcoming and made me feel at home immediately. Residents were fun and playful and genuinely loved being at Kent and working together. The combination of a community hospital with exceptional off-service rotations at Boston Children’s and Baltimore Shock Trauma makes the Kent experience uniquely strong. Growing up on a lake in upstate New York, being in the Northeast and near the water is a perfect place for me.

Hobbies and Interests

Huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan, amateur wakeboarder, extremely amateur mixologist, washed-up football and basketball player, horse-racing enthusiast, 2000s hip-hop nerd. Most likely relaxing with family and friends at the lake.

I was blown away by the program on my interview day. I did not get the chance to rotate at Kent Hospital during 4th year, so I didn’t know what to expect. The program leadership and the residents were so passionate about the program. It was easy to tell this place was special. I remember logging off from the Zoom interview and immediately called my wife and told her how much I LOVED the program.

Hobbies and Interests

I’m a big sports fan. Panthers, Hurricanes, Hornets, and Braves. Even though I’m from NC, I also like the New England teams as well. I also enjoy cycling. I hope to complete some races during my time away from work. My wife and I also have a mini-Australian Shepard who keeps us busy too!

Why Kent Hospital

There are a few reasons why I chose Kent Hospital. First and foremost, I had a blast on interview day. The interviewers made me feel very stress-free, took the time to really get to know me, and made me laugh. I always say if you’re laughing on interview day, that must be a good sign! Also, I had some great conversations with current residents and loved the culture that surrounds this program. It is so much easier to thrive when the environment fosters a good experience. Rhode Island is the perfect place to set up shop and take part in all the great things the Northeast has to offer.

Hobbies and Interests

I love anything outdoors, from hiking to camping to mountain and road biking. I have played most sports throughout my life but especially enjoy basketball. I also enjoy playing video games, board games, or working on puzzles. I love museums, whether it be history, science, or art. Lastly, but certainly not least, spending time with my wife and new baby boy.

Why Kent Hospital

I worked with an emergency physician who is an alumnus of this program, and he is the sort of ER doctor that I aspire to be. After working with him, I looked more into Kent Hospital and fell in love with the program and the location. The high-quality training that is provided by Kent was evident, and during the interview, it is clear that the residents and faculty are all passionate and happy. The structure of the program, one-on-one shifts, and off-service rotations are all incredible opportunities. During this stressful time of finishing medical school, I can rest assured that I will be receiving excellent training here at Kent. Rhode Island is a gorgeous area to explore, from beaches to amazing restaurants, and different parts of New England have so many outdoor activities to enjoy.

Hobbies and Interests

I have many hobbies to keep myself active during my free time. I enjoy everything outdoors: hiking, camping, rock climbing, and skiing. Exploring new areas with my wife and Huskey is one of my favorite things to do. I also shoot film photography on a film camera from the ‘80s, which still takes some great pictures. When not outside, I also love playing board games and D&D and brewing my own kombucha.

Why Kent Hospital
I wanted a program that saw an above average volume of patient in the ED and provided various experiences in the assortment of patient populations that emergency medicine encounters; from pediatric to geriatric and everything in between. Kent Hospital, being a community program, also meant I would spend more time with diagnosing patients’ conditions and performing the procedures and interventions that help them through their plights and hardships rather than needing to consult another service in every circumstance that overlaps our two specialties. I chose emergency medicine because I wanted to care for any patient, anytime, anywhere, and I felt that Kent Hospital would help me achieve my goal.
Hobbies and Interests
I enjoy being active in any way I can, spending my free time in the gym, playing various sports, or outdoors. I am an avid Liverpool FC fan and watch games whenever I can. I’ve been working on learning the guitar for a few years now, so hopefully I can keep up with practicing through residency.

Why Kent Hospital
Kent had a warm and welcoming atmosphere that immediately grabbed my attention. During my interview, they made me feel like I would not just be joining a team, but also a family. I also really valued the four- year curriculum, because I knew it would give me the time I needed to hone my medical and teaching skills as a future emergency medicine physician. Ken has also earned a positive reputation for its enthusiastic teaching atmosphere, well-rounded curriculum, excellent off-service rotations, and promising history of high-achieving residents. This, all while having the opportunity to train in the beautiful state of Rhode Island is why I did not hesitate to choose Kent.
Hobbies and Interests
I love everything about the great outdoors. In the warmer months, I enjoy hiking and spending time at the beach. During the winter, I spend a lot of time snowboarding. I also enjoy cooking, working out, playing piano, traveling, and spending time with my loved ones.

Why Kent Hospital
Having not rotated at Kent Hospital, the big selling point to me was my interview experience. Throughout the interview, everyone was really fun and sweet, which made me feel at ease. I was blown away by how everyone spoke highly of their experience thus far at Kent Hospital. I had some good conversations with current residents and loved the cultures that surrounds this program. The structure of the program, with one-on-one shifts and off-service rotations, presents incredible opportunities for growth. I’m looking forward to checking out the food and pubs in the gorgeous state of Rhode Island.
Hobbies and Interests
Being Canadian, I would have to say that my biggest hobbies are hockey and everything that’s cold. I love watching and playing hockey, but I’m always up for any time of sport. I like the outdoors, going on walks or hiking. I love cooking and trying new recipes. I started getting into plants, so trying to keep my plants alive is a 24-hour job.

Why Kent Hospital
I completed an audition rotation here at Kent during my fourth year and immediately was welcomed by both residents and staff. I was respected as a team member and was offered every opportunity to learn and grow alongside the residents. Every shift, clinical and educational, residents and staff would make sure I was included. I am excited to be a part of such a team and hopefully I can pay that kindness forward!
Hobbies and Interests
I am an avid hockey player and a big Boston Bruins fan. I also love mountain biking, skiing, golfing, and fishing. My wife and I love exploring breweries too.

Fun at Kent Emergency Residency

Hear From Our Residents

I was fortunate enough to complete an away rotation at Kent Hospital during my fourth year of medical school. Over my 4 weeks in the emergency department, I saw first-hand the superior level of patient care and teamwork that makes Kent Hospital unique. Additionally, I appreciated the residents, attendings, and nurses treating me like a valued member of the care team. Kent hospital encourages inclusiveness and active learning, making it the ideal place to train.

From the tour of the facility to the interview itself, I felt relaxed interacting with everyone and knew that I had found the place where I belong. It gave me confidence that I can be happy while training to become a great doctor. Plus, Rhode Island has the great culture, food and the beach to entice anyone.

Kent Hospital was an easy choice for me. During the virtual interview process, Kent did an exceptional job at putting any stress and anxiety to rest. It was clear that the faculty has a true passion for teaching in a supportive and family-oriented environment. All the residents I spoke with were upbeat, close with each other, and raved about their training. The 1:1 ratio between residents and attendings on all shifts is amazing, and the off-service rotations are exceptional. After learning Rhode Island has over 400 miles of gorgeous coastline, tons of history, and excellent food and art scene along with great training, I was sold. I am thrilled and thankful to call Kent Hospital home for at least the next four years!
